Land Rights in Toledo

Navigating a Complex Land Tenure Landscape

The intersection of customary land rights and existing private and leasehold interests has created complex legal and practical questions for communities and landowners across Toledo.

01

The 2015 CCJ Consent Order

The Caribbean Court of Justice Consent Order recognized Maya customary land tenure rights in the Toledo District and established obligations for the Government of Belize regarding their protection.

02

Private & Leasehold Interests

At the same time, thousands of individuals hold registered titles and government leases, creating a need to address how different land interests interact.

03

Evolving Land Tenure Policy

Government efforts to implement the Consent Order and develop a customary land tenure framework have significant implications for land administration in southern Belize.

04

Representation & Dialogue

Toledo Private and Lease Landowners Ltd seeks participation in these discussions so that the interests and concerns of private and lease landowners are included in the process.

Our Vision

Working Toward a Balanced Future

We believe a lasting solution requires meaningful dialogue, legal clarity, transparency, and respect for the rights and interests of all affected communities and landowners.
